Indigenous Education Documentary - St. David's

'Eskibak' New Beginnings:

A documentary film about St. David’s in N’Swakamok (Sudbury)

For the last few years, I've been working with a team from the University of Sudbury / Université de Sudbury's Indigenous Studies program and The National Centre for Collaboration in Indigenous Education to capture and tell stories about Indigenous education in N'Swakamok (Sudbury) and the surrounding area.

This documentary is about St. David Catholic Elementary School in the Donovan. Before working on this, I didn't know anything about St. David's other than that it was a cool new building on Frood Rd. I had no idea what I was walking into, but it, quite literally, showed me what the future of education in Canada looks like (fingers crossed).

While shooting this documentary, I spent a couple of weeks at St. David's school in September 2019. It's as special as it appears in the video and I'm so thankful for the open-armed welcome that Principal Dawn Wemigwans gave us.

I made this documentary with Kevin Fitzmaurice, Ashley Nadjiwon and Crystal Osawamick. I was the filmmaker and was responsible for video production, videography, and video editing.

This project was a collaboration between Université de Sudbury - Indigenous Studies, Laurentian University, Indigenous Services Canada, and National Centre for Collaboration in Indigenous Education (NCCIE).
